Cape Coral is a city in Lee County in the US state of Florida, with 167,400 inhabitants (as of May 2007). The city has a size of 298.1 km². The city is divided into four large squares: Northwest (NW), Northeast (NE), Southwest (SW) and Southeast (SE).
Most of the roads above the Cape Coral Parkway are simply numbered, the streets in the Yacht Club area have street names.
Two central streets divide the four quadrants. Santa Barbara Boulevard divides the city into East and West, Pine Island Road divides the city between North and South. Cape Coral is one of the fastest growing cities in Florida. Many of the properties have direct access to the Pine Island Sound or the Caloosahatchee River.
Cape Coral is a young city, just by European standards. The boom began in the late 50s. In 1957, the "Gulf American Land Corporation" was founded, which turned the land owned by the brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen north of the Caloosahatchee River into a true "waterway wonderland". Fallow and grazing land was criss-crossed with canals and roads. In total, Cape Coral now offers 400 miles (640 km) of waterways and canals, some with access to the Gulf of Mexico.
The first houses were built in 1958. Thanks to an active advertising campaign, the city grew rapidly, although many real estate buyers soon discovered that the hotly praised property was miles away from all civilization facilities and was basically worthless. Others were more fortunate, or more thoroughly informed before buying, and could enjoy a piece of land whose value multiplied over time.
Cape Coral is the second largest city in Florida in terms of area. In 1964, the Cape Coral Bridge, which connects the city with Fort Myers, was built. Due to the large population growth, another bridge was needed and completed in 1997. The "Midpoint Bridge" has brought both cities even closer together.
The oldest part of Cape Coral, the "Yacht Club" in the south-eastern corner, was built in the 60s. Other areas followed: the so-called "Gold Coast" in the east, the "Pelican Area" in the south.1970 Cape Coral was registered as a city. The city had just under 170,000 inhabitants in 2007 and in the winter, thanks to the tourists and "snow birds" (frozen Americans from the north, which drives the snow to Florida) about 20,000 more.
